Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream is a dual-action moisturising cream. It works immediately to help calm and soothe stressed skin while providing it with much-needed hydration. And it works to gradually repair and strengthen the skin barrier so that skin is more resilient, less susceptible to irritation and better able to retain water.

The cream has a cornflower blue colour due to the addition of Guaiazulene, a component of Chamomile Oil.

This lovely cream can be used morning and evening to hydrate the skin and calm redness, irritation or sensitivity. Over time, the gentle active ingredients help reduce inflammation, improve barrier function and promote skin cell regeneration.

Midnight Blue Calming Cream has a luscious creamy texture that protects without it feeling heavy or greasy.

Why Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream?

The Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream contains ceramides, ferments, peptides and botanicals to calm, soothe and hydrate.

It also contains star ingredients Guaiazulene and Centella Asiatica for their healing and regenerative properties.

Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Shea Butter, Argan Oil and Jojoba ensure the skin is replenished with what it needs.

This cream does not contain aggravating fragrance or essential oils.

This is a lovely medium weight cream that works for most skin types and can be easily incorporated into your morning and evening skin care routine.

You can find out more about sensitive skin and how to correctly care for it in our Skin Care Essentials pack.

Key ingredients

Guaiazulene is a derivative of Azulene and is derived from Chamomile Oil. It’s rich in antioxidants, which help defend the skin against free radical damage, but it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties.  Guaiazulene can help reduce redness and irritation, and make the skin feel calmer. Additionally it works to strengthen the skin barrier so that it’s better able to protect itself against environmental and chemical aggressors. This ingredient has been included in this cream at a concentration of 0.03%.

Centella Asiatica, also known as Tiger Grass, is widely recognised a botanical with proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin cell regenerating properties. It’s particularly known for its ability to help rebuild the skin barrier and promote repair. And there’s some evidence to suggest it can also help skin recover from the visible effects of sun damage.

As an antioxidant, Centella Asiatica prevents premature ageing of the skin. Additionally, this botanical is rich in amino acids, which are essential to skin health. Amino acids strengthen the skin’s immune function, maintain hydration and reduce signs of skin ageing.

Ceramide NP plays an important role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. A correctly functioning skin barrier ensures the skin can keep irritants out and moisture in, and reduce the reactivity of the skin. Ceramide NP is an exceptionally pure ceramide that closely mimics ceramides found naturally in the skin. It reinforces the skin’s lipid barrier and improves the moisture balance of the skin’s surface.

Purslane Extract is another botanical antioxidant that’s beginning to reveal its secrets. It contains high levels of:

  • Omega fatty acids, which soothe and repair, improve dryness and moisture levels, and enhance elasticity.
  • Vitamins such as A, C, E, which provide antioxidant and other skin benefits.
  • Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus to support skin health.
  • Genistein to help rejuvenate skin and diminish the look of sagging and crepiness.
  • Purslane Extract for its anti-ageing benefits. Purslane is of great interest in skin care because it may activate telomerase in the skin. Telomerase is an enzyme that’s believed to enable cells to replicate without ageing.

  • Skin feels hydrated and protected.
  • Skin appears calmer and less irritated.
  • Areas of redness and acne marks are reduced over time.
  • Fine lines are less visible due to increased hydration and use of peptides.

Best for

This has been developed to suit most skin types, but especially those with reactive or compromised skin.

It helps to calm irritation, eczema, sensitivity and sunburn, as well as speed the repair of a compromised skin barrier.

Those using actives in their skin care, may find it helps reduce the irritation.

It may be helpful for those with mild acne too as it can reduce inflammation, redness and acne marks. However if you have very oily skin, stick to a gel formulation.

If you have dry skin or you prefer using a rich moisturiser, allow this cream to absorb and then apply a more occlusive moisturiser.

Perfect pairs

This much-loved cream can be incorporated into your skin care routine in many ways.

It can be used as:

  • a serum for those with drier skin and followed with a moisturiser
  • a spot treatment for areas of sensitivity, irritation or inflammation on the face or body
  • a light moisturiser for all over the face

If your skin is stressed or irritated, we recommend amplifying the benefits and getting your skin back to health quicker by following at night with the Laniege Cica Sleeping Mask. Wake up to skin that feels soothed, comforted and hydrated.

Good to know

This product doesn’t contain fragrance but it does have a light natural scent from the ingredients.

It has a natural blue hue from its star ingredient.

Cruelty free and vegan friendly.

Brand ethos

Klairs is a functional skin care brand that seeks to create products that are gentle and don’t contain questionable preservatives.

The brand invests in research and development to identify the best ingredients to target skin concerns while minimising the potential for irritation. Like many other Korean brands, Klairs takes ingredients derived from nature and blends them with the safest and most effective synthetic ingredients.

The Klairs brand position is “simple but enough”.

Being a sister brand to By Wishtrend, it’s not surprising then that they share a similar approach to skin care formulation.

Its products are extensively tested to ensure they’re suitable for all skin types, including sensitive.

Klairs does not have overly complex or long formulations. This better enables the skin to recognise and respond to the key actives, rather than be overloaded.

Klairs evolves its products and ranges, but it eschews creating new products purely to chase a trend. The brand takes the position that the skin needs the same essential ingredients to provide proper care.

Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream Review

I have used many moisturisers, but I have never liked them enough to want repurchase them again. This is the only moisturiser that I have repurchased over and over again and I always make sure that I have several backups of it so that I am never a day without it. I know that some people use this as an occasional spot treatment, but I find that for me, this works best as an everyday moisturiser because I constantly suffer from hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, redness and sensitivity. Since this is a pretty lightweight cream, people who have dry skin or live in a dry and cold climate might not not find this emollient enough for their skin, but this is the perfect texture and consistency for me because I liked to layer up my skincare with different products. I can’t recommend this enough!
