Like many of you, I’ve been fascinated by skin care for most of my life and long searched for the best skin care routine and products. Finding the truth in the world of skin care, though, was elusive, given all the celebrity endorsements, magazine sales pitches and empty brand promises. And trying to learn the science of it and what ingredients not only proved overwhelming, but uncovered much conflicting information.
I had a love affair with natural skin care but didn’t fully understand that they contained many essential oils as preservatives and fragrance and botanical extracts that were not really what they were made out to be. Eventually they wreaked havoc on my skin and triggered a complete fragrance intolerance.
Along the way, I lost faith in the advice I was being given by well-meaning aestheticians and dermatologists who kept trying to sell me super expensive treatments and products I didn’t think were at all suited to my very sensitive skin.
I decided to undertake study in integrative health and dermatology and threw myself into endless hours of searching medical and dermatological research databases and reading published articles. I was struck by the lack of real science that sat behind so many skin care products and was dismayed by the number of potentially harmful ingredients used.
I decided to tackle each of my skin concerns without any clinical interventions. I hunted down products from around the world and religiously applied them, to find my holy grails. Each product was used for a minimum of two months. If I saw improvement, I continued to use the product for another few months to verify or extend any improvements.
Over the course of two years, I tackled my sensitivity, redness and capillaries, dehydrated skin, an impaired skin barrier and pigmentation. To my great surprise, I was also able to eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes, even though I was not really expecting much. The lines between my brow and my forehead have also appeared to diminish, while my stubborn naso-labial lines seem to be are slowly improving.
I also made a breakthrough with my keratosis pilaris and finally got it under control, and also stopped getting those breakouts caused by using those overly rich and heavy urea creams recommended. For the first time in my life, I was able to achieve smoother skin. The ‘chicken skin’ curse was finally behind me.
My experiments with pigmentation continue as I struggle to find anything that works as well as Hydroquinone or my favourite product, which unfortunately has been discontinued in Australia. Trust me when I say I tried dozens of products, with ingredients such as AHAs, Arbutin, Kojic Acid, Niacinamide, Phenylethyl Resorcinol, Vitamin C, Liquorice Extract, Glutathione, Tranexamic Acid and Retinol.
So here I am, wanting to share what I’ve learnt along the way so you are better informed and can find the real ‘promise keepers’ out there. In this way, I hope you’ll get to enjoy the products you use more and not blow money on expensive but otherwise pointless products.
